Floating Boom Barrier

 Problem Statement - 

Water bodies such as #rivers, #lakes, and #oceans face numerous challenges, including #pollution, oil spills, and the spread of invasive species. These issues can have devastating effects on local ecosystems, marine life, and human activities such as fishing, #tourism, and #water sports. Traditional methods for controlling pollution and debris are often inadequate, costly, or environmentally damaging.

Objective

The goal is to design an effective, environmentally friendly floating boom barrier that can be deployed in various aquatic environments to contain and manage pollutants, debris, and invasive species. The barrier should be easy to install, maintain, and remove, and should not harm the local wildlife or disrupt the natural flow of water.

Advantages of Floating Boom Barrier

Containment Efficiency: The barrier effectively contain oil spills, floating debris, and invasive species within a specified area, preventing their spread to other parts of the water body. 

Durability: The barrier withstand harsh environmental conditions, including strong currents, waves, UV radiation, and temperature variations, for extended periods. 

Environmental Impact: The materials and design of the barrier minimizes any adverse effects on local flora and fauna. It never release harmful substances into the water. 

Ease of Deployment: The barrier is easy to deploy, adjust, and remove by a small team without requiring specialized equipment or extensive training. 

Cost-Effectiveness: The design is for balance between effectiveness and cost, making it affordable for widespread use by governments, NGOs, and private entities. 

Adaptability: The barrier is versatile enough to be used in different water bodies, including rivers, lakes, coastal areas, and industrial water bodies, with the ability to adjust to varying water depths and widths.

Technical Specifications -
  • A heavy duty multi-purpose modular barrier.
  • 1 mtr profile x 3 mtr long float modules.
  • Up to one 300mm of highly visible freeboard.
  • Solid thick wall FRP float encasement with polyurethane closed cell floatation foam core provides unsinkable buoyancy.
  • Full length hot dip galvanized structural steel strength and ballast member with integral connection and attachment points.
  • High strength forged steel link and shackle connections with bronze wear surfaces.
  • STRENGTH: Capable of 1400 lbs. concentrated load per square
  • foot, 140 lbs. uniform load per lineal foot, 55,000 lbs. minimum
  • ultimate horizontal load capacity.
  • DRAFT: Natural draft is about 100mm (up to 300mm of freeboard), 
  • CONSTRUCTION: Composite of a Fiber floatation body SS strength member with integral connection and attachment points.
  • FLOATATION BODY: 
  • Fiber resin compounded with a long term UV-15 stabilizer additive to
  • deter the effects of sunlight. The internal polyurethane closed cell
  • floatation foam core fills over 95% of the interior void. Floatation body construction is highly puncture resistant, impact resistant, and provides unsinkable reserve displacement. Barrier modules are designed to stack
  • together to facilitate shipping and storage.
  • CONNECTORS: Barrier modules are connected together by a ¾”
  • Stainless steel link and two anchor shackles with safety
  • bolt type pins. 
  • The assembly is capable of 90° angles and wave action.
  • OPTIONS: The following options are available.
  • Standard safety orange or alternative custom floatation body color.
  • Stock or custom large font permanent warning graphics.
  • Reflective lenses and stanchion mounted solar marine lights.
  • Galvanized steel welded wire mesh submerged debris screens.
  • Custom system configurations to meet with project requirements.
